Brief

Responsible for creating comprehensive 3D environments, historical temple architecture, landscape layouts, and hero props for the animated feature film documenting the millennium-old legacy of Sri Sutturu Math. Delivered production-ready textured assets optimized for the film's animation and rendering pipeline.

Process

Conducted extensive architectural and historical research on traditional Hoysala and Dravidian temple structures. Modeled high-poly and mid-poly modular environment kits, sculpted natural terrain rock formations and flora, and authored realistic PBR material sets capturing weathered stone, carved wood, and aged gold leaf.

Outcome

Delivered complete 3D environment sets, cinematic lighting setups, and background elements used across the film's key narrative sequences, ensuring historical authenticity and visual grandeur throughout the production.

Case Study

01

01 / Historical & Architectural Research

The foundation of this project required deep immersion into the architectural legacy of the 11th century. I extensively researched authentic Hoysala and Dravidian temple layouts, analyzing the structural intricacies of their sanctums, courtyards, and ornate stone carvings. Collaborating with the directorial team, I gathered historical references to ensure that every village structure and temple pillar accurately represented the millennium-old history and cultural weight of the Math.

02 / Modular Environment Kits & Hero Props

To construct massive, sprawling temple complexes efficiently, I engineered a highly optimized modular modeling pipeline. I created interlocking kits comprising ornate stone pillars, fortress ramparts, intricate ceiling panels, and traditional gateways that could be seamlessly snapped together. Alongside the modular kits, I sculpted bespoke, high-poly hero props—such as central statues and religious artifacts—tailored specifically for close-up cinematic camera angles and direct character interactions.

03 / PBR Material Authoring & Surface Realism

Achieving believable antiquity was paramount. Using a combination of Substance Designer and Substance Painter, I authored complex, multi-layered PBR texture sets. The workflow involved blending procedural base materials with hand-painted edge wear, moss accumulation, and micro-surface imperfections. By generating high-fidelity roughness, normal, and ambient occlusion maps, I successfully simulated centuries of natural weathering on granite, sandstone, patinated brass, and ancient carved wood.

04 / Set Dressing & Production Pipeline Integration

The final phase involved meticulously assembling the modular pieces and hero props into large-scale, cohesive environmental scenes. I heavily utilized geometry instancing and LODs to maintain optimal scene performance. I collaborated intimately with the cinematography and animation departments to dress the sets according to the storyboards, establishing initial cinematic lighting passes and ensuring the scene topology allowed for smooth viewport playback and efficient final rendering.
